The MIT Microphotonics Center is a Consortium of scientists, engineers, and strategists from academia and industry, whose core mission is the creation of new materials, structures and architectures to enable the evolution of photonics from single, discrete devices to integrated photonic systems, where such systems facilitate industry and consumer demands within economic and technical boundaries.

We collaborate to explore the evolution of the information age applications and to define the opportunities for innovative integrated photonics research and commercialization. When your company joins the Consortium, you participate in pre-competitive discussions of research projects that may be pursued from time to time, currently including:

  • Integrated Photonics System Roadmap International (IPSR-I)
  • Electronic-Photonic Packaging initiative
  • FUTUR-IC, addresses the component and systems performance scaling path within a sustainability envelope

The Consortium provides both a gateway to the broad integrated photonics research community at MIT, as well as a range of outreach mechanisms that allow your company to collaborate among members us. The Consortium is administered by the Materials Research Laboratory (MRL). Specific benefits are as follows:

  • Invitation and admittance for two people to attend one technical meeting/year, hosted by the Consortium at MIT with presentations on academic and industry technology innovations and latest adoption strategies; access to the technical meeting slides.
  • Timely announcements of published papers, presented posters, and granted patents.
  • Participation in the Integrated Photonics Systems Research-International (IPSR-I) roadmap development:
  • Executive Summary with key takeaways
  • Detailed chapters which cover the following applications: Datacom/telecom, Photonic Integrated Circuit sensors, RF photonics, and Lidar systems
  • Consortium to host industry seminars and visits
  • Industry Advisory Board (“Advisory Board”): Invitation for one person to become an Advisory Board member and attend Advisory Board meetings.  The Advisory Board will provide guidance on overall consortium topics for exploration and discussion
  • Opportunities to fund sponsored projects under a separately negotiated agreement
  • Webinars: Access to live webinars and their recordings which are offered throughout the year.
  • Website: Includes exclusive materials for members
